As the cooler weather sets in and the snow continues to fall, there is no denying that we are leaving autumn behind and approaching a new season. Winter is officially upon us (granted this happens a lot sooner in Canada than in other locations around the world!). Don't get me wrong, I LOVE cooler weather. I'm that basic girl sporting a top knot through the Starbucks DT, sweating through knits upon knits on September 1st. The first snow fall, however, is a MUCH different thing.
This new season as a momma has been a learning curve to say the least. There is no 'running a quick errand' anymore. NUH UH. Prep time to go ANYWHERE is well over half an hour. I must pack our little bean into the carseat (sans snowsuit), layer on his mittens, touque and blankets (as he expresses his grave disapproval) and drive to our destination (then repeating said tasks in reversal).
All that to say, the first signs of winter can often leave me exhausted, uninspired and unmotivated. The following are 5 tips that have helped me stay motivated during this transition from fall to chilly winter!
1. Wake Up Earlier
Even though this is a great habit to get into all year round, I find I need more time in the winter. The roads are not great and I do not want to feel pressured into rushing wherever I need to go. I also like to give myself a little extra time to make myself a warm drink to take along with me in the morning. It is something small that I look forward to and motivates me when I'm heading out into the cold! It is also a cheaper alternative to pulling through a drive through every morning for your coffee/latte/tea!
2. Give 110%
My father in law has always said "do your best, look your best and be your best". We all have casual days where we are rushed and have a million things higher on the priority list than our wardrobe, but I definitely feel more motivated when I wake up and put 110% into getting ready. During the winter I generally wake up before the sun does due to the fewer hours of daylight. This definitely causes me to feel a little 'sluggish' and it is so tempting to not get myself ready for the day (especially if we plan to be at home editing that day). I have really tried to break that habit by consistently getting up and preparing myself for the day, even if I don't plan to leave the house. I am almost always more productive when I do this!
3. Do not sacrifice warmth for fashion!
I have most definitely been guilty of this back in my teen years. Every single time I chose fashion over warmth it was a huge damper on my day! Even if you have command start, the dreaded walk to your car is just one hinderance in feeling motivated to get out and accomplish what you need to accomplish! Also, knit scarves, toques and mittens are just so much yes.
4. Crock Pot Meals
Crock Pot Meals are a life saver during those winter months where you leave your home in the dark and come home in the dark! I don't know about you, but I would feel less motivated to cook when I got home from work and it was pitch black out. MANY times we just ended up eating out or ordering pizza which is not a healthy habit for your budget or your waist line!
5. Embrace the coziness of the Season "Hygge - Hoo-guh (n)"
One of my favourite aspects of winter is appreciating it from the inside looking out! Cozy blankets, candles, warm drinks and festive decor. It's a great time of year to slow down and enjoy some quality time snuggled up with your family. The danish word "Hygge" is a noun meaning "Coziness and a deeply satisfying feeling of well-being. Enjoying life's simple pleasures." I am a major Hygge advocate and love the idea of embracing the simplicity of life. Being an Amundrud (Norwegian), my interest in the Scandinavian way of life has intrigued my interest and understanding Hygge has been an incredibly rewarding journey thus far!
